A recent news story about a senior citizen whose house in Middleton was sold without her knowledge by a power of attorney got a lot of attention. How could this happen? Join us on the 15th to learn everything you have ever wanted to know about Power of Attorney (POA). What is a POA? What are the roles and responsibilities of a POA? What are the factors to consider when choosing a POA? Could a POA sell a principal’s house without him or her agreeing to it or even knowing about it?
Amy Roehl Devine is an attorney with Haskins Short & Brindley LLC, an elder law firm, in Madison, Wis. She handles estate planning, probate, estate administration, Medicaid, guardianship, and special needs trusts matters. She is currently an adjunct professor teaching estate planning at the University of Wisconsin Law School. Attorney Devine is a graduate of CUNY School of Law and holds a M.S.W. with a Certificate in Applied Gerontology from the UW Milwaukee. She is also a board member of New Bridge, a nonprofit serving seniors in Madison.
Rhonda Sweeney is an accountant and a Daily Money Manager at Numb3rs R Us, an accounting firm based in Durand, Wis. but serves clients all over Wisconsin and in numerous states thanks to electronic conferencing and other remote technology. In addition to Daily Money Management and Accounting, she is bonded to offer Power of Attorney and Trustee Services. Rhonda started Numb3rs R Us in 2020 and has spent over 30 years as a business owner, manager or accountant working in both the corporate world and in small business.
